Kit Cookson 

Born in Caerphilly, Kit began playing the cello at the age of nine and has since developed a wide range of experience as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician.

 

He was awarded a music scholarship to The Cathedral School, Llandaff, before continuing his studies at the junior department of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama under Kyle Patterson and Nikki Thomas. He later attended Wells Cathedral School as a specialist musician on a full Music and Dance Scheme scholarship, where he studied with Penny Driver and served as principal cellist of both the Symphony Orchestra and the String Ensemble.
 

Kit is currently in his second year at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama on a scholarship from the Thompson Educational Trust, studying with Louise Hopkins, Head of Strings.

Alongside his solo and orchestral work, he is an active chamber musician and regularly performs in a piano trio at Guildhall School.

As a performer, Kit has appeared with the Welsh National Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, including performances at the BBC Proms.

 

He has also participated in masterclasses with leading cellists, including Alice Neary, Guy Johnston, and Raphael Wallfisch.

Kit has a particular love for the late Romantic cello repertoire, as well as a strong interest in Baroque and historically informed performance practice through his experience in early music ensembles. 
 

As a teacher, he aims to provide creative, engaging and supportive lessons, tailored to each student, helping musicians of all ages feel inspired, build confidence, develop strong technique, and find enjoyment in their playing.
